Unit 9: Genre

Auteur Theory

Auteur theory in my own words is when a director uses the same style in most of the movies he or she directs. They would use the same style through there career, one of the people who dose this sort of thing is Wes Anderson who basically uses the same story line in every movie, just with different actors. Auteur theory represents the argument that every film is merely the reflection of the director’s artistic vision. This theory essentially argues that each film a director creates has underlying visual queues. They feature recognizable patterns or themes that make it consistent with the director’s artistic identity.

Today, we where able to film in 3 different locations. I got the bus into college, then I took out kit, then waited for Emily’s dad to pick me and the kit up at college. When they got there an hour later, we took the kit down to his van and we then drove to pick up Lauren, but not before filming 1 take in boots. Then we drove to Padstow, which took an hour to get there because there was traffic, but when we got there, Lauren changed into her costume and we filmed for about an hour in the church. Then we went back up to Emily’s and and had lunch, while we charged the batteries, changed costumes and deleted some footage we didn’t need. After that, we walked up to Emily’s dad’s house and he took us to the beach, where we filmed some stuff there. At the same time deleting some footage because the card kept saying it was full and I had lost mine, so we couldn’t use it. Anyway, we set a time in which we thought was the best time to leave for me to catch the bus in Bodmin back home and I just made it in time for everyone lessons to end. If I didn’t make it back, Emily was going to take me to McDonalds and then take me to my dad’s who is in Bath and has no food at his place. in boots we used Emily's phone as the camera as we didn't want to draw any attention to ourselves when we filmed. We did switch to the M50 when were filming in the church and on the beach. Anyway, we will be back on Wednesday to film in the hall and Emily's Grandad's house, then we would be done and we can go into College on Thursday to edit the short film, that would give us more time to collar grade and make the short film look much better.

Today, we filmed the last 2 scenes in 3 different locations in the church hall to film Lauren dancing, Emily's granddad's house to film in his bedroom and the bathroom and then we walked back to Emily's house to film Lauren in her bathtub. Firstly, I caught the bus into Bodmin and then I walked up to the art store and bought a new SD card because I lost my other one and on Monday we had to keep deleting footage from previous scenes because the card kept saying it was full. Then, David gave me a 80D because I told him a problem that we had on Monday with the 50M and the lens and he said to use the 80D just in case. So I brought that down to my dad who was waiting for me in the car park to take me to Padstow. When I got there, we waited for Lauren who got there an hour later on the bus. Then we walked back to Emily's house and all changed into costume, which was really hot because we where all wearing quite warm clothing. The reason for changing costume, was for the dance scene in the hall and we where all actors in the scene, even though me and Emily had only one take that we had to be dressed for. When Lauren had to dance in the hall, Emily was teaching her before hand how to do really simple dance moves. For some takes, we only shot Lauren's head and then shot Emily's feet to make out like Lauren is dancing properly. When we finished that scene we walked back to Emily's house and changed into thinner cloths and had lunch. After Lunch, Lauren changed into a different costume and we all walked up to Emily's granddad's house, where we shot in the bedroom and bathroom. We set designed the rooms before we filmed and all the footage that we shot where all really pretty in Emily's granddads house. When we finished filming there, we walked back to Emily's house, had a little break while Lauren changed costume again, then we walked up to the bathroom and filled the bath with water, put some flowers and milk in it, then put Lauren in there and put some water  in her hair, put makeup under her eyes and flowers in her hair, then started to film. We wrapped at 17:00 and then chilled in Emily's garden for an hour, waiting for our parents to pick us up.

What went wrong

Idea:
When it came to coming up with ideas, for replicating the style of Sophia Coppila, I came up with one idea that was quite bad because I didn't get very far in writing the script because I didn't really know what I was talking about and Emily was doing her deconstruction, which didn't really help me at all in the first 2 days of the week that we were supposed to be doing the pre-production paperwork. On Tuesday, at the end of the day, she came up with an idea that was really good and she told me if she was to come up with another idea, to stick with the previous idea because we didn't have time to think about it. On Wednesday, she came into College with 4 ideas, then we narrowed it down to 2 ideas, which where the previous idea and another idea. Then we did a shot list and story bored for the other idea and then it was the end of the day. On Thursday we came back and we both agreed that the other idea wasn't very good, then we changed it slightly and started a shot list and story bored again for that idea. Then Blue came over and said to us that we should have done the original idea and after a really long conversation with Blue, we decided to go back to the original idea. Then we started to do the shot list and story bored together, then when we finished those, we did the rest of the pre-pro paperwork and by the end of the day, we had only had 2 pieces of paperwork that we decided to finish on Friday.

Filming:
When it came to filming the actual project, we filmed it over 2 days. On the fist day, we where able to film in 3 different locations. I got the bus into college, then I took out kit, then waited for Emily’s dad to pick me and the kit up at college. When they got there an hour later, we took the kit down to his van and we then drove to pick up Lauren, but not before filming 1 take in boots. On the second day, we filmed the last 2 scenes in 3 different locations in the church hall to film Lauren dancing, Emily's granddad's house to film in his bedroom and the bathroom and then we walked back to Emily's house to film Lauren in her bathtub. Firstly, I caught the bus into Bodmin and then I walked up to the art store and bought a new SD card because I lost my other one and on Monday we had to keep deleting footage from previous scenes because the card kept saying it was full. Editing:

Because we were able to film in 2 days, we came in on Thursday and started editing, I got most of the way through, but I still had a lot to do in 2 week time, when we came back from doing work experience. When I came back on Monday, my premier pro kept crashing at a certain point on the timeline and was being really annoying. This meant that I couldn't edit for most of the day, this was until I tried editing on Chris's computer and it did work, so I started to edit 2 hours before the end of the day and I still hadn't finished, but I was able to finish, export and upload the short film onto YouTube on Chis's laptop on Tuesday last period. Chris was rejoiced when I told him that he could get his laptop back to himself.

Unit 9: Title sequence

A title sequence (also called an opening sequence or intro) is the method by which films or television programmes present their title and key production and cast members, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound (often an opening theme song with visuals, akin to a brief music video).[1] It typically includes (or begins) the text of the opening credits, and helps establish the setting and tone of the program. It may consist of live action, animation, music, still images, and/or graphics. In some films, the title sequence is preceded by a cold open. In this unit we are given the task of researching and creating our own title sequence for a series. Then film the first scene of the very first episode in the series.

BBC Ghosts

Mind maps/ synopsis

A series of unfortunate events

Being human

Synopsis - The show
I am thinking that the show will have something to do with ghosts and possibly someone who is alive and can see the ghosts. I am thinking this person would be a young girl. Because in episode one she almost died but came back to life, therefore is able to see dead people. I am thinking about having the person who is alive, maybe be a therapist, that way she could help the ghosts to move on. In the series, she could be meeting a bunch of ghosts and try to move them on. The ghosts will wear what they died in and remain in the general area that they died. Maybe in the series the main character meets the ghost of the person who they are in therapy with. The character development of the girl who is living, would be developing less of a work alcoholic behavior that would be shown in the first episode when she is constantly looking at her phone, checking emails and responding to messages. Through the first season, the audience would see the main character, accepting the fact that she can see ghosts and getting the hang of talking to the ghosts when there are people who is alive in the first maybe 6 episodes. Maybe there could be a ghost in the therapist office that she works at, someone who could have been in the same room that she used to work at who died of a heart attack, he could have a different way of treating the patient that her.

Synopsis - The first episode
In the first episode, we see the main character in her theorist’s office doing her usual job helping living people throughout her day. Then there could be a conversation with one of her colleagues talking about how she wishes her job could be slightly more interesting. Then when she gets in her car, she could be driving along the road and swerve to miss a dear but hit a car. Then she is taken to the hospital, where she died for a few moments before the doctors brought her back to life. That will be done with just sounds and a black screen and when the camera shows her again, she would be walking out the hospital, with a few stitches on her head. She would be looking at her phone, looking at all the missed calls and texts she had gotten, while someone who is dead would be sitting on the wall, she wouldn’t look at that person because she is glued to her phone, but just walk past him or her. Then she would walk past the benches and sit down on one to look at her texts and next to her would be a ghost. Then she would look at the ghost and say; “It’s a bit early for Halloween.” Then the ghost would look at her and the scene would dip to black.

Synopsis - The title sequence
After speaking with blue, I had to change the fact that it would look more like a crime show, with the look of the investigation wall, instead, I am thinking of using a medical book, using pictures and maps from there past in the book and have the name of the ghost on the front of the page. Then have their picture of where they are as a ghost now, in the same book and have the name of the person in the costume, edited in the shot somewhere. That combined with a history books, a mental health book and a few ghost books, being put on a desk at some point in the title sequence maybe at the begging, to show the audience that it hits both topics. Then at the end of the title sequence, it would show the main character alone on a cliff and she would look to her left where a ghost would appear.

Probe lens edit

BTS

What went wrong

For the probe lens, we used a slider in the studio and we used things in the studio, like fairy lights, books and tape to make the probe lens go through. For that shoot, Emily took charge in filming and moving the camera, I took BTS and moved props around and Josh did practically nothing apart from maybe hold a blue thing up to the light when we told him to because he was jut standing around, we also made him be our model. When we where tiding up, Josh left us in the studio and didn't bother to help tidy anything away. I don't think I'll use the probe lens in my title sequence because I don't really want to be faffing around with the amount of light it needs to get the shot, I also want the shot to look nice and the footage that we got from the probe lens looks quite ugly. I edited the footage on the timeline and sent the link to Josh and Emily.

Gimble edit

BTS

What went wrong

In the second lesson, we used the gimble on the stare way and again Josh didn't join in or participate in any way. Me and Emily just filmed each other, this time I had a go on the gimble, we ended up using both lenses which where both really good, but I think I am going to use the one with the shallow depth of field in my title sequence, because it looks a lot better and more aesthetic. I actually enjoyed using this gimble as it was much lighter that the gimbles that we used before in previous units. Again I took BTS of what we where doing, but because I was holding the gimble, I took less BTS than last lesson when we where in the studio. Because I edited the other footage that we did in the studio, Emily edited the footage we did on the gimble, on the timeline and sent it to me and Josh to put on our WIX's.

Scrolling credits - edit

I have seen this technique being used when I watch/ walk out at the end of a movie or a series, when they show the cast and crew in a really long scroll which no one actually watches, which is a shame to the people who spent hours putting the credits together. To accomplish this edit, I followed Blue's instructions that she sent out on an email. The information was quite helpful as I had never used after effects before. I also didn't know how to export on Premier ether, but the word document on how to do it that Blue sent out was very useful into understanding how to export it. By doing this, I successfully learned how actual productions do scrolling credits at the end of a movie or an episode in a series. It must take a really long time just to get one set of credits done for one movie, considering how long they go on for in certain movies.

Glitch - edit

To accomplish this edit, it took me half the day to realize that the video that was sent on the email, made no sense what so ever because it contained no sound and literally showed the mouse clicking on some things and making the words glitch in the end of the edit. I had to get Chris who also didn't understand what the video was trying to do because it had no sound. Then after about 3 hours, I started over again and just fiddled with the scale, rotation and opacity to get the video on the left. That isn't a proper glitch, but its a good as I'm ever going to get. Despite the fact that this was a waist of time, I learned how to collar the text and make it do weird things on the screen by using the glitch effect and using the scale, rotation and opacity to make the words jump around in different ways.

Today I needed Ellie so I could take a picture of her in makeup and in a 20s costume, down at the train station. I used Courtney's special effects makeup to make Ellie look as if she had been beaten up by a train, which took me about 2 hours to put on Ellie. My dad drove both of us down to the train station in Bodmin. I only needed a picture of her in the makeup and the 20s costume, which only took about 10 minuets. Chris did point out that it was a lot of work just for a few pictures, which I was very aware of. The picture, will be used for when I film the medical books, later on in this week.

Today me and Emily both needed to film with Lauren, so we took it in terns. I got dropped off by my dad at 11:390, thinking that Lauren would get there for 11:00, but because the busses were running late, she got to Emily's at 12:00. Anyway, first at 12:00, me, Emily and Lauren went to a photographer's house that Emily knows, to shoot in his studio. This was for Emily's shoot, Lauren dressed in fashionable cloths and posed in front of a black backdrop for Emily's title sequence. After filming that, we all walked back to Emily's house and I changed into the army uniform, and Lauren changed into the smart cloths that she brought with her. Then we walked up to the benches and filmed in that location for my small scene. Because I was an actor, Emily had to film and because I forgot to bring my tripod and Emily's tripod wasn't working, we had to use the gimble. We also forgot a mic, so I am just going to use the camera audio in editing. In that shoot, Emily filmed our little scene, with a few different angles. Then we did a small take for my title sequence, where Lauren was on a cliff, and she looked to her left and I would appear. We had to do the take twice because the first time Emily didn't take the shot still and it would be difficult to edit if the shot wasn't still. Then Emily took a picture of me in the uniform, by the benches for the medical books that I shot earlier on this week. Then we walked back to Emily's house, me and Lauren changed again into cloths for Emily's scene, and we did a small shoot in a bus stop, where I forgot all my lines, then we went to the graphite tunnel and filmed Lauren running from the camera in there, then we went to a telephone box and filmed Lauren in there. Then we went back to Emily's house and Lauren changed for the final time into smart cloths. Then Emily's mum drove us both to the college, so I could film Lauren walking past Emily as the really bored ghost on the wall who disappeared after Lauren walked past her. I was going to use the tripod, but I ended up using the gimble to keep the shot still when Emily had to get out of the shot, the second time that Lauren had to walk past Emily. Then Emily's mum drove me home, then drove Lauren home, then went home and I have now finally finished my scene. All there is now left to do, is the shot with the books in the studio, the shots in the library with Emily acting as Lauren and the shot of the medical books which can be shot in the studio but can really be shot anywhere.

Today I did the shoot in the shoot in the studio, the one where I zoom out to revile Lauren reading lots of old books. Because I didn't have Lauren, I was going to use Blue and have her reading the ghost book that I printed off and sellotape onto the book that we used in FMP. Then Blue said to show her a picture of Lauren and she said that she had a 1st year with the exact same hair style, so I ended up using her, but I used Blue to make sure the lighting was good, and all the books were positioned in the correct place. I took two takes of the 1st year holding the book up to her face with the gimble by zooming out of her using the gimble, then I let her go back to her lesson as Blue instructed. After she left, I did a few takes of the books on the table, using the camera on free hand, these shots where not necessary, but I thought I may as well get them just in case. Then I asked Blue to help me take back the books as there where a lot of them. The books I used, was a few of Blue's mum brought in, a few of my Chronical of Narnia books and some books from the staff room to make the take look like she is reading a lot of books.

BTS

Today in the first brake, I was able to get Blue to help me be the hands in the shot, like putting the folders down and drawing on the papers. To get lots of paperwork, both me and blue printed things off to put then in the folders and make the table really messy, like this is Lauren's research of the ghosts. I also wrote little notes that I want the audience to think that Lauren wrote it as part of her notes into helping the ghosts to move on. I used those notes to have in the folders and clipped to the pictures. I wrote them to make them seem funny to the audience, to show them it's a comedy, but if they were only glimpsing at the shot, they would just assume its research. I now need to film in the bodmin Library and film two other folders with pictures in them, one of the pictures will be another screen shot from ghosts Instagram and the other would be of Emily and her dad down at the pier, with her dad disappearing in the second picture. I was going to do all the pictures myself with makeup and costume, but I didn't have enough costumes and the Emily couldn't find the 50s dress.

BTS

Today I did a driving lesson with dad and I drove to Padstow. Considering I hadn’t driven in 2 weeks, I thought I did a very good job, I think this may have been my best ever driving lesson so far. The reason why we were going to Padstow, was because I needed to film a take on the benches because I got it wrong when I filmed with Lauren last week. Anyway, I brought my costume and kit with me, the only thing was when we got to Padstow, I forgot a hair tie and the hat that goes with the costume, so we went back to Bodmin and picked that up, then we drove back to Padstow and filmed the take. I did the take as if the camera was taking it from Lauren’s perspective, which looked consideringly good. I didn’t want to fully dress up as I knew the camera would only see me from the top half, so if you look at the pictures and wonder why I look half like I’m from the war, you now know why. When I finished filming and had gotten back to the car, I saw Emily coming back from her shift, we talked for a bit and one of the conversations that popped up was taking a picture with her dad on the beach and sending it to me so I could film it in the studio, like I had done earlier on in the week.

BTS

Today I went into college on my day off and filmed the folders with pictures, like I had done on earlier on in the week, only this time with the picture of Emily and her dad and the picture of Humphrey from the show ‘Ghosts.’ Like last time I used Blue as my hands in the shot which didn’t take very long considering I did the other 3 last week. She then left me to do a few more shots and I then packed the studio away and walked back home, where dad took me to the library in Bodmin and filmed in there, but not before asking the people in the library first. I have now finished filming, all I have to do now is edit.

Planning:
When planning the idea, we weren't given much time to think about it and it was really confusing about what we had to do and when the deadline for it was, because both Blue and Chris were giving us different information about what a certain thing and when the deadline for that certain was, me along with a lot of people were very confused and sort of halted the planning prosses into making us do pre-pro really quickly. By doing that filming was stretched out for a few weeks, giving us plenty of time to film, but no time to plan and do pre-pro, when we really needed more time to plan and do pre-pro for it and therefore making the title sequence and scene better when it came to filming and editing.

Filming:
Filming the idea, was spread over a few days, the main reason for this was because of the feasibility of people and props. The first day I needed Ellie so I could take a picture of her in makeup and in a 20s costume, down at the train station. On Sunday, I did a driving lesson with dad, and I drove to Padstow.

Then on Monday I was able to film in 2 different locations, I went into college on my day off and filmed the folders with pictures, like I had done on earlier on in the week, only this time with the picture of Emily and her dad and the picture of Humphrey from the show ‘Ghosts.’ Like last time I used Blue as my hands in the shot which didn’t take very long considering I did the other 3 last week. She then left me to do a few more shots and I then packed the studio away and walked back home, where dad took me to the library in Bodmin and filmed in there, but not before asking the people in the library first. I have now finished filming; all I have to do now is edit.

Finding music/ graphics:
Fining music and graphics were both equally stressful. I spet absolutely ages looking for the correct piano music that would fit the title sequence, I ended up with the piano music that I used in the title sequence in my edit. The graphics also took a few hours to find, the first one I found only took about 20 minuets to find, but I had to pay for them, so about 3 hours later I found the one I used in the title sequence.

Editing:
When it came to editing, I had to write lots of notifications, because the scene didn't make much sense without them. Saying this, no one could actually read the notifications, because they were so fast, even so my focus was more on the title sequence, because that's what the project was supposed to be about. If someone deconstructed my title sequence and scene, they would have easily guessed the many genera's, but in my feedback because they weren't watching every single shot properly, they didn't get that my collar grading was supposed to make people think that the genera was misinterpreting it to make them think that it was a horror.
