Evaluating first year
Compared to how you felt at the beginning of the course how confident do you feel in the subject now?
At the begging of the course, I didn’t know how much goes into creating films, adverts, music videos and other media things, that meant when doing the paperwork, I wasn’t as detailed as I am now as I now understand and know what to wright when it comes to doing paperwork. I also didn’t know how to edit as well as I do now and now when it comes to editing, I am more confident, and I now know what to do and how to use all the effects in premier.
Is there anything you are not confident with?
Yes, when screening I am not very confident because I am watching people watch my work, in FMP because my short film was 10 minutes long, me and Emily waited in the toilet for it to finish. I am also not very confident in all the lenses and types of cameras that everyone talks about when disclosing what kind of camera, they are going to use for their project. I can’t resolve this, but I can use an M50 with the pancake lens which I know has shallow depth of field. Another thing that I am not very confident in using is audio. I mean I know how to use it and put it onto a timeline and my audio is getting better every time I edit something new, but it isn’t my strongest element.
What were your favourite units in the first year? Why?
My favourite units of the first year, was music video and FMP, even though those units where really, really stressful when it came to filming. For example, in Music video, the week before we had to film, we kept changing the song and the location, until we went back to the original song that we chose. In FMP when filming an actor (Honey) kept not showing up and giving us very late notice about if she was going to show up. In the very last day, we ended up using Emily as her the character Honey was going to play, because we had not time to wait for her. When editing, because it ended up being 10 minutes, editing towards the end got really boring. Despite this, they were my favourite units, based on the way the turned out in the final edit. I also think they were my favourite because they weren’t easy, I think easy projects are less enjoyable and less memorable if they are simple.
Have your ideas for the future after college changed? Why?
Yes, they have, before I found this course, I had no idea what I wanted to do at the beginning of the year, when I found the course, I thought I wouldn’t be a camera operator in film but have some experience in which it could be a very distant dream. Now, I have thought about it more, I think it is more likely that I would get a camera and try doing promotional videos for businesses, I also thought of my own business, in which I film people talking about their life, then I or someone I know would act some of it out and show it at their funerals, that way there loved ones can remember the dead person the way they wanted to be remembered. I also don’t want to go to university; however, I will go if I can’t find any work in film/ promotional videos, I also thought that as I am building up my businesses as a freelancer, I would work down at the cinema.
What are you going to do to achieve your new goals?
To achieve my new goals, I will buy a camera, with a piece of audio and go ask friends, family, people around Bodmin if they want promotional videos of their business for free. Then when I get enough people, I could start asking for money, then hopefully I could get people to come to me, instead of me coming to them. If I start asking businesses now, then I would get a better chance of having more people to film for. I will also put the final videos onto my Instagram and my YouTube, to promote myself.
Reflecting on your feedback from last year what do you think you need to do better?
The feedback from last year was to work on recording/ editing audio when it comes to editing but do think compared to the beginning of the year, my audio has gotten better.
What do you want to learn this year?
This year I need to lean how to film a promotional video, even though I have a vague idea about how to do it. I also need to lean about documentaries, like how to film and edit them, that way for the future I can do promotional videos and documentary’s, (I film people talking about their life, then I or someone I know would act some of it out and show it at their funerals, that way their loved ones can remember the dead person the way they wanted to be remembered) in a preretinal way when I do it as a business in the future.
What would you like to be better at?
I would like to be better at recording audio, when doing interviews, but I have discovered a recorder on my phone that I can use to record audio, which is almost as good as using audio.
Overall, what are your main objectives this year?
My main objective for this year is to finish all the units by getting distinctions in every one of them. I also want to get jobs filming promotional videos for people. I am also keen to beet my page count high score when doing paperwork, which is 48 pages in a write up in genera when I had to write research and add the 3 deconstructions onto the same document. I also want to see Emily beet her page count high score, which remains to be 96 pages in her evaluation for FMP.
Experience

Ha-Hum-Ah - Promotional videos/ photography
For this, me and a few others in my class went down to Bodmin Theatre and filmed rehearsals for a Christmas show that they were rehearing for. We did this to make an edit and promote the show as well as ourselves. We also went down a second time to film and do some photography of the dress rehearsals, to promote the show even further with all the lights and costume. The second time watching it, was far superior to when we watched it was the first time.

Roofing/ paving/ painting
- Because of covid my work experience was canceled, so my dad got me doing small jobs for people that he worked on as well. On one job, I paved some dodgy slabs in someone's garden.
- On a separate job, I also helped my dad fix a barn roof, drilling holes and putting the screws in on the roof so it didn't fly away. I worked at a height with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring roofing maintenance and repair works were safe and reliable and worked at an uncomfortable height.
- On the final job I did for my dad, I painted the bottom part of the outside of a house.
